Delaware: The First State

Small in stature, Delaware is big in heart.  It has 2,057 square miles and is larger in size only to its northern neighbor of Rhode Island. What it lacks in size it makes up in beauty. Sunny sandy beaches line Delaware’s 28 miles of coastline nestled between Maryland, Pennsylvania and New Jersey on the Atlantic Coast.

This gives it close proximity to many big cities, the ideal day-trip for residents and tourists alike.  With nearly 900,000 residents calling it home, Delaware’s main cities are Wilmington, Newark and Dover.

Besides the state’s pristine beaches catering to many visitors from neighboring states on the Eastern seaboard, casinos bring in an element of fun with gaming and excitement, complete with shows and fun for grown-ups. For those who just want a nice long walk, try the mile-long boardwalk at Rehoboth Beach. Stop at the arcades, pizza parlors, funnel cake vendors or the amusement park while shopping among the throng of people or bunches of swirling seagulls. Miniature golf and summer concerts round out a day of fun for visitors and residents alike.

Seashore State Park offers a myriad of outdoor recreation and activities including surfing, camping, boating, fishing and picnicking to families and children of all ages.

Steeped in Colonial history, Delaware was the first state to ratify the Constitution, becoming the first state. The convention of the original colonies took place in Dover, which is now Delaware’s capital. It was explored by Spanish and Portuguese in the late 1500s and the Dutch in the early 1600s.
