A Sportsman’s Paradise Down on the Bayou

Louisiana is a state with richness in history that is unequaled anywhere in the nation. Its history dates back to the earliest Native Americans. The French were the first European colonists, and were later joined by the Acadians and the Spanish. Standing on the shores of the great Mississippi River, it is easy to imagine yourself one of the pirate ships that used to call the river their home.

Today Louisiana offers a unique opportunity to experience American history up close. There are many original structures, which is quite surprising considering the numerous hurricanes and floods the area has suffered over the centuries. From the pre-Columbian ruins of Poverty Point to restored ante bellum plantations, Louisiana is a treasure trove of history.

Louisiana is referred to as the Sportsman’s Paradise, and for very good reason. The list of available outdoor recreation is virtually limitless. A swamp tour offers a look at one of nature’s best preserved eco systems, resplendent with wildlife and unusual plants. The tours are worth the time just to have the opportunity to observe the huge alligators in their natural habitat.

Louisiana is also considered by many to be the birthplace of jazz, and produced sensations such as Al Hirt, Louis Armstrong, Fats Domino, and Jerry Lee Lewis. The Louisiana State Museum, located in New Orleans, hosts a famous collection dedicated to the history of jazz, and is well worth a look. Jazz is still a huge part of life in Louisiana, and Jackson Square in New Orleans hosts many festivals and jazz performances throughout the year.

You cannot mention Louisiana without paying tribute to the great city of New Orleans. Even the devastation of Hurricane Katrina has not damaged the spirit of the unique and beautiful gem. From Jackson Square, which overlooks the Mississippi River, you can rent a horse and buggy and spend a day exploring the French Quarter. Be sure and make a stop at one of the many wonderful restaurants and outdoor cafes. You simply cannot leave the city without trying some of the delicious local dishes such as gumbo or Cajun Jambalaya. Once you've eaten your fill, hop a streetcar over to the Audubon Park, New Orleans’s world famous zoo.
