Montana, otherwise known as the TreasureState or Big Sky Country, was admitted as a state on November 8, 1889. The state capital is Helena, which has a population of 27,383. The state motto is Oro y plata, meaning silver and gold. The state flower is Bitterroot. The state tree is the Ponderosa pine. The Western Meadowlark is the state bird.

There are 56 counties that make up Montana. The largest by population is Yellowstone, with a population of 136,691. The largest by square miles is Beaverhead, with 5,543 square miles. Montana itself is made up of 147,046 square miles and is ranked 4th in size in the United States. The population is nearly 1 million, which ranks Montana as 44th in the nation. The bordering states include Idaho, South Dakota, North Dakota and Wyoming, with Canada as a bordering country. Montana is made up of mountains to the west and rolling plains to the east.

Montana consists of major rivers, such as the YellowstoneRiver, the Missouri River and the Clark ForkRiver. The major lakes include the FlatheadLake and FortPeckLake. The highest point in Montana is Granite Peak, which is 12,799 feet above sea level and the lowest point is KootenaiRiver, which is 1,800 feet below sea level.

Many famous people and residents are from Montana, including actors Gary Cooper, Myrna Loy and Martha Raye; motorcyclist Evel Knievel, filmmaker David Lynch, author Dorothy Baker and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Alfred Bertram Guthrie.

Montana has many beautiful and historical sites such as GlacierNational Park, Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument and YellowstoneNational Park. In addition, Montana also has its share of oddball attractions. One such place is BootHillCemetery which has some really strange gravestones. Also, there is The Prairie Schooner restaurant, which has oxen statues that pee, and the O’Fallon Historical Museum which houses Steer Montana, the world’s largest steer.

Montana has its share of interesting facts, such as the wild buffalo that can still be seen at the National Bison Range, its seven Indian reservations, and at Egg Mountain, there have been dinosaur eggs discovered.
