Ohio, located in the Midwestern part of the United States, is commonly known as “the heart of it all.” This state is the 34th largest state by area. The seventh largest in terms of population it has more than 11 million residents. The capital city of Ohio is Columbus, located near the geographic center of the state. Ohio was the 17th state to join the Union in 1803. The state flower of Ohio is the red carnation and the state tree is the buckeye tree, giving Ohio the nickname of the “Buckeye State.” The name Ohio actually comes from the Seneca word meaning “large creek.”
The location of Ohio in relation to other states has played a large part in this state’s economic growth and expansion. With the nation’s 10th-largest highway network, Ohio is within a one-day drive of more than 50% of the North American population, with more than 70% of the continent’s manufacturing resources. Ohio is bordered on the northern and southern ends by Lake Erie and the Ohio River, allowing for increased water expansion. The land of Ohio is a mixture of flat plains, forests, hills, rivers, creeks and ponds. This allows for Ohio residents to engage in a variety of outdoor activities. The summers of Ohio are usually hot and humid, while the winters can be very cold. There is moderate rainfall and snowfall in this state, depending on the season.
There are quite a few major cities in the state of Ohio. Columbus is the home of The Ohio State University, featuring fine athletic teams nicknamed the Buckeyes. Ohioans are very team-spirited and love to support them.
Another major city in Ohio is the City of Cincinnati. This city is the third-largest city in Ohio, and is home to the University of Cincinnati and Xavier University. Cincinnati is also the site of the Proctor & Gamble Company, a multinational Fortune 500 corporation. Proctor & Gamble manufactures a wide range of consumer goods, and is the 14th largest company in the United States in terms of profit.
There are many famous people who were born in Ohio. These include Halle Berry, Bow Wow, Steve Burton, Dave Chappelle, Tom Cruise, and Katie Holmes to name a few. Many famous athletes also come from Ohio. This list includes Roger Clemens, Ken Griffey, Jr., Archie Griffin, LeBron James, and Jim Tressel, who is currently the head football coach of The Ohio State Buckeyes.
