On, Wisconsin!

The Midwestern State of Wisconsin, otherwise known as the Badger State, became the 30th state of the United States on May 29, 1848. Known as the Dairy State, it has a population of more than 5.3 million and it measures 65,503 square miles. Based on square miles, it is the 23rd largest state. It is the 18th most populated.

The state motto of Wisconsin is ‘Forward’ and the state song is On, Wisconsin! The state symbols of Wisconsin are as follows: the robin is the state bird; the badger, the state animal; the muskellunge, the state fish; the state flower, the wood violet; and, the state tree, the sugar maple.

The capital of Wisconsin is Madison, with a population of 208,054. It consists of 72 counties. Milwaukee is the largest county in terms of population with 921,654 residents. The largest county based on area is Marathon, which is 1,545 square miles.

The major rivers found in Wisconsin include the Wisconsin, Mississippi, St. Croix River and Chippewa. The major lakes include Lake Michigan, Lake Superior and Lake Winnebago. The highest point is Wisconsin is Timms Hill, which measures 1,952 feet above sea level. The state is bordered by Minnesota, Michigan, Iowa, and Illinois, Lake Superior and Lake Michigan.

Wisconsin offers many activities and attractions for its residents. Summerfest, which is the world’s largest music festival, is held in Maier Lakefront Festival Park. Wisconsin Dells offers the large water park Noah’s Ark and Door County offers Peninsula State Park with beaches, a lighthouse and campsites.

While Wisconsin has many attractions, it also has its share of oddball places to visit, such as JFK’s Giant Twine Ball, Alex Jordan’s House on a Rock, and Wizard Quest, which is a fun house and scavenger hunt all rolled into one.

Famous residents of Wisconsin include actors and acresses Don Ameche, Ellen Corby, Tyne Daly and Chris Farley; musician Les Paul; baseball player Bob Ueker; architect Frank Lloyd Wright; and, author Laura Ingalls Wilder.

There are a few fun facts to know about Wisconsin. The cow chip throwing contest is held in Prairie du Sac. The City of Green Bay is known as the Toilet Paper Capital of the World. There is a mustard museum which holds the world’s largest collection of mustard. Its football fans of the NFL Green Bay Packers are affectionately called Cheeseheads, while the babies in nearby hospitals are appropriately donned in green and gold in the nursery ward in honor of the team.
